In a way, we were destined to be in the building industry.
Our late grandpa, John Binet, was an influential, renowned, luxury custom home builder. As children we spent many weekends with our parents attending open homes, whether we were browsing through, or our parents were hosting the open home to visitors. That distinct new home scent still lingers with me.
Our grandparent’s home was extraordinary! It was a showcase of luxury, high end finishes and detail. The furniture was perfect, hand selected to suit each corner of the house. The guest bedroom shower had no frame, was a cave-like curved wall, covered in floor to wall blue tiles, something so unique. The indoor pool had a cloudy, blue ceiling – as if you were swimming outside!
There were windows inside of the pool, which looked through the main hallway of the house. As children we would be amused for hours while we waved to our parents from inside the pool, into the next level down of the home. Our parents and grandparents would scold us as we would play in the elevator to move between the three floors.
Going to their home was an adventure, of pure indulgence. It was the beginning of our understanding of quality, the difference that selections can make, and the idea and importance of a prestigious custom-built home.
At home, we built cubby houses everywhere we could. We’d grab the seat cushions off the couch, and lean them against one another to build the walls, then would grab blankets and create the roof. Mum and Dad would let us sleep in there from time to time too!
I remember clearly how Joel would frequently grab a backpack of tools, jump on his push bike, and head 5 mins down the road, to what was then still undeveloped land. He would build treehouses with handrails high up in the branches. We would collect scrap pieces of timber from building sites nearby to use for the cubby house. He would’ve only been in primary school then, and my family and I couldn’t believe what he was capable of doing!
Family and generosity with quality time has always been at the forefront of our values. Our Mum and Dad had a number of different businesses. They both also worked in real estate, which was another reason for us visiting numerous homes in our childhood. Above all, our parents possessed an original knack for people. They opened their arms to everyone. We often had various people stay with us, because they just needed somewhere to go, to feel safe and secure. We hosted many international students, who we shared our home with over many of our school years. Our parents had this ability to make everyone feel welcome, and to truly engage with, and enjoy each person’s attributes.
Joel and I love people! It’s a huge reason why we do what we do. We love understanding different people’s way of life, what they do for work, and what they value most. We love watching our team grow as individuals, and as a crew. It aspires us to always be pushing to be better and do bigger things.
Even though I ventured off to University, then worked in the Digital Media world for a few years – I made my way back, joining BTM four years ago! Family has always been in my roots. It has been a great journey of learning the industry, understanding the running’s of a business and the importance of quality within not only construction, but relationships too.
What I love most about my job is getting texts or emails from clients, with awesome messages about how the guys on site are doing a great job, are super respectful, and producing a beautiful outcome.
I also enjoy working within a growing business, and the need to continuously forward think. I do believe there are many builders who underestimate the importance of the administration side of a business, and it can quickly become overwhelming for both the client’s and the builder. Joel however, has always acknowledged the need for this, and made this a priority for BTM. It means that all our subcontractors, suppliers, and client’s needs are met, along with all the insurances and legalities, which can easily become a very stressful side of running a business.
At BTM, we love creating amazing relationships along the whole way of the build, from the design of the build, to seeing the clients thrilled with the end result of our work. It is the most rewarding job and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
